Every summer, AC technicians in Islamabad and Rawalpindi get booked for days. If your AC stops cooling in June, you can wait a week. Here is how to avoid that, and how to know what a fair repair looks like.
Common AC problems
- Not cooling: Usually low gas, a dirty filter or a weak capacitor.
- Water dripping inside: A blocked drain pipe. This is a quick fix.
- Loud noise: Loose fan, worn bearings or a compressor issue.
- AC turns off by itself: Overheating, a faulty sensor or a voltage problem.
- High electricity bill: A dirty coil or low gas makes the compressor run longer.
Typical costs (approximate)
- General service and cleaning: PKR 2,500 to 4,000 per unit
- Gas refill: PKR 4,000 to 9,000 depending on gas type and tonnage
- Capacitor replacement: PKR 1,500 to 3,500
- Compressor replacement: the most expensive repair, so get a second opinion first
How to avoid being overcharged
- Ask for the fault in plain words before work starts.
- Ask for the price of parts and labour separately.
- If told “compressor is dead”, ask them to show the amps reading.
- Never pay for gas without seeing the gauge.
Service before summer
Book a service in March or April. Filters and coils get cleaned, small faults are found early, and you avoid the May rush.
