Short answer: a geyser that does not heat is usually a gas supply or pilot problem (gas geysers), a failed heating element or thermostat (electric geysers), or scale and sediment blocking the tank. Some of these are quick fixes. Gas faults are not a DIY job.

Gas geyser not heating: common causes

  • Pilot flame goes out: a weak or blocked pilot, a faulty thermocouple or a draught from the vent.
  • Low gas pressure: common in winter evenings when many homes use gas at once.
  • Blocked burner: dust and soot reduce the flame or make it uneven.
  • Faulty thermostat or gas valve: the geyser lights but shuts off early.

Electric geyser not heating: common causes

  • Burnt heating element: the geyser powers on but the water stays cold or lukewarm.
  • Thermostat fault: it cuts power too early or never switches on.
  • Tripped breaker or loose connection: check the supply before blaming the geyser.
  • Scale build-up: hard water coats the element and tank, so heating becomes slow and noisy.

Safe checks before you call

  1. Check that the water supply is on and other taps have normal pressure.
  2. For an electric geyser, check the breaker has not tripped. Do not open the geyser.
  3. For a gas geyser, confirm other gas appliances work. If you smell gas, switch off the supply, open windows, avoid switches and flames, and call for help.
  4. Note what you see: does it light and go off, not light at all, or heat only partly?

That is the limit of safe home checks. Do not open the gas valve, burner or electric box yourself.

Geyser repair or replacement?

Repair makes sense for a thermostat, element, thermocouple or burner cleaning. Replacement is worth considering when the tank is leaking, heavily corroded or the geyser is old and repairs keep repeating. A plumber can tell you which applies after inspecting it.

Prevent geyser problems

  • Flush or descale the tank periodically, especially with hard water.
  • Keep the vent and surrounding area clear of dust and obstructions.
  • Do not ignore small leaks around the fittings.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my geyser not heating water?

Common causes are a pilot or gas supply problem in gas geysers, a burnt element or thermostat in electric geysers, and scale build-up in the tank. A plumber can confirm after inspection.

Geyser pani garam nahi kar raha, kya karun?

Check that the supply is on and the breaker has not tripped. If a gas geyser smells of gas, switch off the supply, ventilate and call a professional. Otherwise book a plumber to inspect it.

Is it safe to repair a gas geyser myself?

No. Gas valves, burners and vents should only be handled by a trained technician because of leak and carbon monoxide risks.

How often should a geyser be serviced?

A yearly check before winter is a sensible habit, and descaling helps in hard water areas.

Should I repair or replace my geyser?

Repair small parts like thermostats and elements. Replace if the tank leaks, corrodes or the unit is old and failing repeatedly.
