Short answer: a water motor that hums but does not pump usually has an air lock, a blocked or leaking suction line or a worn impeller. A motor that does not start at all is often an electrical problem such as a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor or a burnt winding.
Motor does not start
- No power: breaker tripped, loose connection or a switch fault.
- Failed capacitor: the motor hums but does not start turning.
- Burnt winding or stuck shaft: often after running dry or overheating.
Motor runs but water does not come
- Air lock in the suction pipe: the pump loses prime.
- Leak in the suction line or foot valve: air enters or water drains back.
- Worn impeller or seal: flow becomes weak or stops.
- Low water in the tank or well: the pump runs dry.
Motor runs but pressure is low
Check for a partly blocked line, a partly closed valve, a leak after the pump or a failing pump. Tank float problems also cause low or no supply even when the motor is fine.
Safe checks you can do
- Switch off the motor and check the tank has water.
- Check that valves on the line are open.
- Look for visible leaks around the pump and pipes.
- Check the breaker for the motor circuit.
Do not open the motor terminal box or touch wiring with wet hands. Running a pump dry damages the seal and winding, so stop it if no water is moving.
Repair or replace the motor?
Seals, capacitors, impellers and foot valves are usually repairable. A burnt winding on an old motor may cost close to a replacement, so ask for both options after inspection.

Water motor not working?
Frequently asked questions
Why is my water motor running but not pumping water?
Common causes are an air lock, a leak in the suction line or foot valve, a worn impeller or an empty tank. A plumber can find which.
Water motor start nahi ho rahi, kya wajah ho sakti hai?
Often a tripped breaker, failed capacitor, loose wiring or a burnt winding. Switch it off and have it checked rather than repeatedly trying to start it.
Can a water motor run dry?
It should not. Running dry overheats the pump and damages the seal and winding.
How do I prevent motor problems?
Keep the tank filled, check floats and valves, fix leaks in suction lines and have the pump serviced if it makes new noises.
Do you also fix tank float and low-pressure issues?
Yes, our plumbers check tank floats, valves and lines along with the motor.
